Honestly, the trade-off runs in both directions. Threading and waxing pull hair out from the root, so the results last longer than trimming at the surface does — I'm not going to pretend otherwise. Why it works
Laser and IPL target pigment — that’s why they often can’t detect white, gray, or very light hair. Purelia’s dual-edge head works mechanically instead, trimming hair at the surface regardless of color.
The physics, not the pitch
Laser and IPL don't find hair the way you do. They find melanin, the pigment inside the hair, and everything they do afterwards depends on that one step working.
The device fires a pulse of light into the skin.
Melanin inside the hair turns that light into heat.
The heat is what reaches the follicle. Without step two there is no heat.
Gray, white, very light blond and red hair carry little or no melanin. Step two never happens, so step three never happens either.
Manufacturers of home IPL devices publish a hair and skin compatibility chart, and on those charts the light shades are marked as unsuitable. That exclusion is written by the people who build and sell the devices, not by me. It has to be there, because a machine that finds hair by its pigment cannot work on hair that has almost none.

Keeping it clean
A device you hold against your face is worth knowing how to clean. This one is simple, and there is nothing to buy for it.
Rinse the head after every use. The head lifts off the handle. Hold it under the tap until the trimmed hair is gone. It takes a few seconds and needs nothing beyond running water.
Let it dry before you put it back on. Clipping a damp head back onto the handle traps moisture where you cannot see it. Leave it on a towel while you finish up, then reattach it.
Keep the handle dry. Only the head is made to be washed. The handle holds the motor and the battery, so it stays out of the water: no rinsing it, no soaking it, no running it under the tap.
Don't press while you use it. Guide the head over the skin and let it do the work. Pressing hard is what wears the head out early, and it is not needed for the trim.
